How To Fix “LogonUI.exe” Errors

The LogonUI.exe is an executable file which is used by the Microsoft Logon User Interface, which is a process related to the Windows XP user switching screen. This particular file is extremely important for two reasons, one of which is because it is an executable file and it has a specific function, the other reason is because it is important for the stability of your computer system as it is required for several essential applications.

This error will typically show in this format:

“The instruction at “0x7c9e868e” referenced memory at “0x00008023”; the memory could not be written”

What Causes The LogonUI.exe Error

Some of the main causes of the LogonUI.exe errors are:

  • Windows registry keys are damaged or corrupt
  • Files and settings have been misplaced or deleted
  • LogonUI.exe has been deleted

How To Fix LogonUI.exe Error

Step 1 – Make Sure That You Can Copy The Files Required To Run LogonUI.exe

The initial step to take is to copy the “userinit.exe” and “wsaupdater.exe” files on your PC, which can be done by following the steps outlined here:

  1. Insert the XP installation CD into your computer
  2. Boot from the CD-ROM
  3. Press “R” on the keyboard (boots into the “recovery console”)
  4. Type the following: “copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe”
  5. Press Enter
  6. Restart Windows
  7. Press WINDOWS KEY + R
  8. Type regedit & press Enter
  9. Locate the following key in the registry at the following location-
  10. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows

  11. Make a modification to the entry C:\WINDOWS\System32\wsaupdater.exe to:
  12. See if the error shows again

C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe.

  • Press Enter
  • Restart your system

Step 2 – Copy The LogonUI.exe File To Your PC

The next step is to copy a working version of the LogonUI.exe file from the Windows installation CD to your hard drive. This can be done by following these steps:

  1. Put the XP installation CD into your system
  2. Press the WINDOWS KEY + R on your keyboard
  3. Type “expand D:\i386\logonui.ex_ %windir%\system32\logonui.exe”

Step 3 – Clean Out The Registry

One of the big causes of LogonUI.exe errors is through the “registry” database of your computer. This is a large database which stores vital information & settings for your PC, and is used continually to help Windows to read the files, settings & options that it needs to run. Although the registry is one of the most important parts of every Windows system, it’s continually causing a large number of problems thanks to the way it will often become corrupted and unreadable. This is the cause behind many LogonUI.exe errors, and needs to be resolved by using a reliable “registry cleaner” application.
