Windows Update 0x80070420 Error Fix – Working Fix To Repair The 0x80070420 Error On Your PC

Windows Update 0x80070420 Error appears when you are trying to update Windows using the Windows Update program or Microsoft Update websites to install new patches in your computer. The 0x80070420 error stops the update from completing, and will prevent you from being able to use the latest Windows version.  The error is mainly caused by damage or corruption to files or settings, which means they won’t be working properly in your system.  You need to be able to resolve these errors to be able to update Windows again.  This tutorial is a working fix for the problem.

What Causes 0x80070420 Errors On Windows?

The primary cause of the 0x80070420 errors you are experiencing is that Windows is unable to correctly load or read the required files it requires to complete the update process of Windows.  You need to be able to repair the specific file that is causing the error to appear on your screen – which can be accomplished by following the steps outlined below:

How To Fix 0x80070420 Errors On Your System

Step 1 Stop The “Windows Update” Service

To resolve this problem, you need to first stop Windows Update service from running (you can restart the service afterwards).  To do this, use these steps:

  1. Close any Windows Update or Microsoft Update browser windows.
  2. Click Start, type “cmd” in the Search box, right-click in the Command Prompt result, and then click Run as Administrator.  Type the administrator password if you are prompted or provide confirmation.
  3. At the Command Prompt window, type the following commands.  Remember to press “ENTER” after each command.

net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
exit

Step 2 – Restart & Try To Re-Install The Updates For Your PC

After you have successfully stopped the Windows Update service from running, you need to reboot your PC.  Once you are logged back in to Windows, try to install the updates – which you can do easily by doing these steps:

  • Click Start> All Programs> Windows Update
  • Follow the update wizard to begin updating
  • Select the different updates you want to be installed by ticking the check box before the name of the specific update entry (make sure that there is a check mark)
  • Restart your PC when prompted

If the update process is successful, then the problem has been resolved.  However, if the error resurfaced when you try to install the updates again, then you need to clean out your registry.

Step 3 Clean Out The Registry

The registry is one of the biggest culprits for a host of problems in Windows, including the 0x80070420 errors that are plaguing your system.  The registry is a huge database where all of Windows’ settings and options it uses for your files and programs are stored. Windows will need to access these settings every time it tries to load or run any of your files or programs.  The registry is a very important Windows component, but is often experiencing these errors that result in slowdowns and other problems. These errors happen because Windows works at such a rapid pace that sometimes it saves the registry settings incorrectly. You need to clean out the registry using a registry cleaner which can scan your system and repair the errors inside it.
