Have you ever tried to figure out how to save an image from a Word document someone sent to you? It’s easier than you think even if it doesn’t look that at first. All you need to do is right-click on the picture and select “Save as picture…”, then save the image whenever you want to. But what if you have a document with lots of images that you want to extract in bulk? This simple trick will help.

To extract images from a Microsoft Office document (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx), you need to have Windows built-in extractor for .zip files or any other app that extracts .zip. The do the following:

1. Open Windows Explorer (or File Explorer on newer Windows version) and find the file you want to extract the images from
2. Select the file and press F2 to change the file extension to .zip, then press Enter. You will get a warning from Windows where you should click on “Yes” to proceed
3. Now your MS Office file is an ordinary .zip file. Right-click on it and select “Extract All” to extract the content
4. Choose the destination folder for the extracted content, otherwise a new folder with the same name as the file name will be created in the folder where the original file is located.
5. To view the extracted files, go to the destination folder and open the subfolder called either “word” for Word documents, “xl” for spreadsheets and “ppt” for PowerPoint documents
6. Double-click on the “media” folder and you’ll find all the images from the file there
