What Is The Urlmon.dll error?

Urlmon.dll is a file that’s used by the Windows “OLE” (Object Linking And Embedding) linking technology. This file is widely used by Microsoft Office programs and are best known for being used inside Microsoft Word & Excel. This file is used to put “objects” inside your documents, such as links, media, images, Wordart, etc.

The urlmon.dll error normally appears due to the file being corrupted, damaged or misplaced. The error you receive from this file is as follows:

  • “STOP: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
    The image urlmon.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum”
  • Iexplore caused an invalid page fault in module Urlmon.dll.

How To Fix The Urlmon.dll Error

Step 1 - Put A Fresh File Onto Your System

To fix the Urlmon.dll error, you first need to either restore the file from your installation CD or put a fresh copy onto your system.

1. First download this replacement urlmon.dll file from our site.

2. Then click on “My Computer” and then browse to C:/Windows/System32

3. Locate the current “Urlmon.dll” file on your system

4. Rename the current file on your PC to “urlmon.dll.old” or similar

5. Place the new Urlmon.dll you downloaded into this folder

6. Restart your PC

This should replace the urlmon.dll file that is damaged and corrupted, replacing it with a new copy which should be fresh and readable. This should work for most people, but if it does not then you should proceed to the further steps.

Step 2 - Restore Your PC Using “System Restore”

If the first step foes not help your problem, then you should try using the “system restore” feature in Windows. This is very reliable and could make the issue disappear, especially if it’s only just started appearing. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Click Start, point to All programs>Accessories>System Tools, and then click System Restore.

2. Next, select Restore my computer to an earlier time, and click Next.

3. Select the date and time to which you want your system to be restored, and click Next.

4. Click Next to restore your computer

Step 3 - Scan For Viruses & Clean The Registry

Another big issue that causes the urlmon.dll error is the way in which viruses can infect this file and the registry can become corrupted, making Windows confused about it. This is a big problem which is can be fixed easily by using antivirus tools and a registry cleaner. You should download the tools listed above and scan with them. If they find a lot of errors, you should use them to remove the problems and increase the reliability of your system.
